Benefits of a Drug Free
Workplace
Drug
screening helps reduce absenteeism, increases productivity, and enhances
workplace safety. There is another way, however, to immediately help the
bottom line by going an extra step with drug screening. This extra step
is becoming a certified Drug-Free Workplace.
The criteria for becoming a Drug-Free Workplace vary slightly from state
to state but are relatively easy. Certification can usually be obtained
in 5 simple steps from the State Board of Workers’ Compensation:
Your company must have a substance abuse policy.
Your company must conduct drug testing.
Your company must conduct two hours of employee education each year.
Your company must conduct two hours of supervisor training each year.
Your company must either have an EAP (Employee Assistance Program) or a
referral list of treatment and counseling centers in your area.
The monetary benefit for becoming a Drug-Free Workplace will be
reflected in lower workers’ compensation premiums for the company.
(Maybe the money saved can go towards raises!) Eleven states currently
offer some form of premium discounts for certification.
Alabama – 5% discount
Arkansas – at least 5%
Arizona – at least 5%
Florida – usually 5%
Georgia – 7.5%
Idaho – unspecified
Mississippi – unspecified
Ohio – tiered discount from 6% to 20%
South Carolina - 5% if actuarially sound
Tennessee - 5% if actuarially sound
Texas – Under review
Virginia – up to 5%
